The rules that reset email in 2024
In February 2024 Gmail and Yahoo began enforcing new requirements for bulk senders — anyone sending roughly 5,000 or more messages per day to their users. The headline is the one-click unsubscribe mandate, but it comes bundled with authentication and complaint-rate requirements. Two years on, these are simply the baseline for reaching the inbox. Here is exactly what you need and how to comply.
Who counts as a bulk sender
The 5,000/day threshold is measured per From: domain across the provider's users, and once you cross it you are treated as a bulk sender permanently. Note that this counts marketing and transactional mail together at the domain level, so even mostly-transactional senders can qualify. When in doubt, meet the requirements regardless of volume — none of them hurt a small sender.
Requirement 1: Authenticate everything
Bulk senders must authenticate with all three standards:
- SPF and DKIM on every message.
- A DMARC record on the From domain, at minimum
p=none. - Alignment: the From domain must align with SPF or DKIM.
- Valid forward and reverse DNS (PTR) for sending IPs.
A minimal compliant DMARC record:
_dmarc.yourdomain.com IN TXT "v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourdomain.com"
Requirement 2: One-click unsubscribe (the big one)
For marketing and promotional mail, you must support one-click unsubscribe as defined in RFC 8058. That means two headers, and the unsubscribe must process without any further interaction — no login, no "are you sure" page.
List-Unsubscribe: <https://yourdomain.com/unsub?u=abc123>, <mailto:unsubscribe@yourdomain.com>List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click
How it works: the mail client shows a native "Unsubscribe" link. When the user taps it, the client sends an HTTP POST to your URL with the body List-Unsubscribe=One-Click. Your endpoint must:
- Accept the
POSTand immediately queue the address for removal. - Honor the request within two days.
- Still keep a visible unsubscribe link in the message body as well.
Common mistake: requiring the user to click through to a preferences page and log in. That fails the one-click requirement — the POST alone must be enough.
Requirement 3: Stay under the spam threshold
Gmail requires bulk senders to keep the user-reported spam complaint rate below 0.3%, and strongly recommends staying under 0.1%. Cross 0.3% and your mail gets throttled or junked regardless of everything else. Because this is measured by Gmail's own users, the only tool you have is Google Postmaster Tools, where you can watch your complaint rate day by day.
- Only mail people who explicitly opted in.
- Make unsubscribing trivial, so annoyed users leave instead of reporting spam.
- Prune inactive recipients before they turn into complainers.
A quick compliance checklist
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC published, with alignment verified.
- Valid PTR records on all sending IPs.
List-UnsubscribeandList-Unsubscribe-Poston all marketing mail.- A working one-click POST endpoint that removes addresses within two days.
- Spam complaint rate monitored and kept under 0.3%.
- Message formatting compliant with RFC 5322; a valid, resolvable From domain.
